Are You Taking Responsibility for Your Business?
by Kara Kelso

A few weeks ago we asked several work at home moms a fun question - Would you do something illegal, even if you probably wouldn't be caught?

Of course, everyone said "absolutely not!". This is the response you would expect from most anyone in the work at home mom community. We have to set an example for our children, of course.

However, it amazes me how often I see others involved in illegal activities or not taking responsibility for their business. No matter if it's using excuses to not deliver products on time or running a business without proper licenses - it's unethical, irresponsible, and sometimes illegal.

As they say, ignorance of the law is no excuse. It's true even online, and you could be subject to fines or even lose your business. The following are some examples of illegal or unethical practices you may be faced with, and how to handle them.

- Running raffles or illegal contests
Every state has different laws, and in most states it's very illegal to run a raffle without a permit. In some states, raffles are considered gambling and you may not hold a raffle unless it's for charity. There are many raffle groups online, but that doesn't mean they are legal. Avoid!

Lessons a Toddler Taught Me About Running a Business
by Cristina Favreau

I'm always amazed at how much my son teaches me about life — that is, when I take the time to remark that what he's doing can teach me something valuable... I watched him play on our porch one sunny day, and asked myself, "What can I learn about myself and the way I run my business?" Here are a few lessons I've learned:

Growth & Learning:

  • growth is gradual—you don’t grow up in one day, one week, one month, or even in one year
  • learn new skills by watching the big kids
  • be curious; explore everything
  • just take one step at a time
  • never refuse help if it’s offered
  • don’t worry about getting your hands dirty

Automating Your Pattern Business
by Talena Bacon

Selling E-goods, including e-patterns online has never been easier than it is now. In this day and age of continued technological growth and more people logging on to the Internet there is greater opportunity for E-goods products to reach a huge marketplace.

Having an online business can be very similar in some ways to an actual brick and mortar business, with the exception that your customers can come shop with you from all around the world simply by clicking onto your website. One of the advantages to having an online business is the ability to work from home or anywhere for that matter and set your own hours. Allocating those hours for your business can be the challenge. How many evenings have you found yourself sitting in front of the computer and later thinking of other things you could have been doing? That's the big draw back when you sell E-goods is you have to be able to send them to your customers within a reasonable amount of time. Ofcourse you don't know when those orders will come in and if your like me you want your customer to have that product they purchased really quickly.

The Global Work Marketplace - The Revolution of How Work Gets Done
by Lori Redfield

Will cubicles be a distant memory for today’s workforce? Will the expense of office space and the tremendous burden of employee benefits be a thing of the past for modern day businesses?

The reality is, for thousands of people, this change has already occurred. Internet based 'Service Auctions' now abound where businesses can post their ongoing jobs or one-time projects to a global market of freelance professionals, a.k.a. - 'Service Providers'.

The service providers then bid on the work, adorn the bid with their 'pitch' and online portfolio and voila! What commonly takes weeks to accomplish and thousands of dollars in payroll and advertising revenue... can take a business as little as a day with no overhead costs at all.

Another advantage to this reverse auction model is the feedback system. Providers are rated by previous buyers who have used their service. Generally a buyer can review a providers resume, portfolio, job history, references AND their feedback reviews with a click of a mouse.

It can be a challenge for new service providers to jump in on these job sites without any previous feedback to grace their bids with the coveted five star rating. But once that first project or two is under their belt, it is absolutely possible to make a successful freelance career via these types of job sites.

What's the Impression You Leave?

by Kathleen Gage

Will your customer’s first experience be their last or the beginning of something great?

Since moving to Oregon we have had numerous out-of-town visitors. Invariably, we take them out to eat. One of my favorite places to eat is a tiny café in Pleasant Hill. The Sunrise Café is a “blink and you miss it” kind of place. Tucked away between the local feed store and next to the one gas station in town, the Sunrise Café is a local favorite.

From the first time I stepped foot in this nostalgic eatery, I had such an incredible experience that I return often. Each time I have out-of-town guests, I make sure to take them to the Sunrise Café for an experience they are sure to remember for years to come.

What makes the Sunrise Café so special? The food is better than mom’s home cooking; full of great taste, very filling and served up hot. The décor is funky and entertaining. Everyone who works at the Sunrise is genuinely happy when people stop in.

My first time at the Sunrise was when we were house hunting in the area. We stopped in with our realtor and were immediately welcomed by Marianne. Because she knows her customers, she knew this was our first visit and inquired about what brought us to the area. After sharing our house hunting stories, she wished us well, said she hoped we would find the perfect home and invited us back again.
